Preparing and eating a meal provides many opportunities to work on a variety of skills that children need to be ready to learn in school. Skills such as counting, following directions, participating in routines, learning colors, and developing a larger vocabulary can all be worked on during this time.

1,2,3  Numbers Being able to count and recognize numbers and number sets is critical to developing more complex math skills such as addition and subtraction. By helping children learn these skills, they will be ready to learn math when they start school.

Regular, safe physical activity that lets children build muscles and skills such as crawling, walking, jumping, and climbing are vital to healthy growth and development– not just for their bodies but also for their brains.
